A Month to Celebrate Black History, Culture and Traditions with Our Giant Eagle Family

Black History Month is a time to honor the many achievements and important contributions of Black individuals today and throughout history. This month was an opportunity for us to celebrate as a Giant Eagle family, and a chance to reflect and learn from the past so we can grow and make a better future.

As part of this year’s celebration of Black History Month, all Team Members were encouraged to participate in a host of educational opportunities and activities ranging from Black vendor Q&A sessions, Book Club and Movie Club discussions, and even a Black History Trivia Happy Hour. In addition to these events, we also hosted round table discussions with our store and corporate leadership teams and provided educational resources, suggested activities, and shared community event information celebrating Black History Month with our Team Members on our internal Team Member portal.

At Giant Eagle and GetGo, our Business Resource Groups (BRGs) serve as strategic partners and work to engage our Team Members and communities with our Inclusion and Diversity mission and strategy. They also help build an inclusive & diverse culture, which results in higher Team Member engagement, innovative thinking and better-informed business decisions.

Our Black Leaders and Collaborators Collective BRG works to promote:

  • Internal mentoring and guidance programs through career development
  • Team Member and Customer engagement and better ethnic offerings
  • Communication and awareness within Giant Eagle and GetGo
  • Participation in activities that are relevant to the African American and Black communities in which we serve

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Day of Service & Register Campaign

This year, we honored the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in a day of service. Our Team Members volunteered at local organizations to help celebrate the legacy of Dr. King.
We also commemorated MLK Jr. by designating the funds from our register donation campaign to local pantries supporting predominantly Black communities through Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated and Feeding America partnerships. Through this initiative we raised over $125,00 which was the equivalent of providing 562,500 meals!
Thank you to all who donated!

Virtual Movie Club Discussion: "42"

Our Team Members participated in a Virtual Movie Club discussing the movie "42".

In 1946, Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford), legendary manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, defies major league baseball's notorious color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) to the team. The heroic act puts both Rickey and Robinson in the firing line of the public, the press and other players. Facing open racism from all sides, Robinson demonstrates true courage and admirable restraint by not reacting in kind and lets his undeniable talent silence the critics for him.

Virtual Book Club Discussion: "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry"

Our Team Members participated in a Virtual Book Club discussing "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry".

Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie's story—Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

In honor of Black History Month, our B.L.A.C.C. Business Resource Group was thrilled to highlight the many unique career paths and talents that make up our Giant Eagle family. Each week, we featured several Team Members from our supermarkets, GetGo's and Corporate teams.

PowerBites! Q&A Session

We hosted "Question and Answer" learning sessions with two diverse suppliers: Akron Honey and Powerbites! Our Team Member had the opportunity to learn about two great products, while being inspired by the courage and innovative spirit of these entrepreneurs.

About PowerBites!

PowerBites! were created by accident. As a busy father, business owner and chef, Sharif Rasheed wanted to create a soft granola bar that his teething son could enjoy. Sharif aimed for healthy ingredients that would actually taste good. As he was making his first batch, they naturally broke into squares. And his son Malcolm, devoured them in a heartbeat. After eating the leftovers, Sharif realized he was onto something. Through a business partnership and friendship with Derric Heck, the company has found ways to give back to the community. Powerbites! is addressing food hunger through “Snacktivism” – giving funds to under resourced children in schools in historically marginalized neighborhoods.

Akron Honey Q&A Session

Team Members also had the opportunity in the Q&A to ask questions and learn more about bee keeping. From cultivating different honey tastes, sustainability, and new ways to use honey to create awesome flavors in dishes, our Team Members learned so much!

About Akron Honey

Akron Honey is one of our newest local partners to our Northeast Ohio stores. What began on a small piece of urban land down the street from Brent Wesley's house, soon turned into so much more.

“Mostly, I wanted to do something cool for our community. As we founded the apiary, learned about beekeeping and honey, it was something we wanted to share. We spend a lot of time going to local schools to teach kids about the bees, environment, sustainability and how honey is made.”
