Giant Eagle & GetGo Celebrates NDEAM! Meet Chelsea and her supervisor Marie at the Wheeler Road GetGo in Westfield, IN!
October is National Differently Abled Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and at Giant Eagle, we are so proud to call our Team Members who are differently abled a part of our family. The primary message of NDEAM is “Inclusion Drives Innovation” and we truly value the perspectives of our differently abled Team Members and their champions within the workplace.
This week, we share the story of GetGo Team Member, Chelsea and her supervisor, Marie.
Chelsea and Marie know the importance of being team players, through thick and thin. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Chelsea has been on leave from her Tuesdays and Thursdays at Store #7551, but she’s far from forgotten. Marie has kept in touch with Chelsea and her mom, Julie, just as she did when Chelsea recently had surgery. As former Ricker’s Team Members, Chelsea and Marie have truly been with the store since day one. Marie says that Chelsea has always been positive and loves coming to work. Chelsea’s favorite part of her work is seeing her team and usual guests, and she is a pro at keeping the sales floor clean and organized.
Julie is grateful for the leadership Marie has shown Chelsea, saying “Marie has always reached out if there were concerns…she likes to makes sure Chelsea is doing what she’s supposed to be doing and is enjoying it.” She has also noticed that since taking on this role, Chelsea has grown a lot in terms of professionalism and responsibility; she embraces the opportunity to be trained and retrained in order to get a job done correctly, and has carried that spirit of learning into her home and school work. Marie agrees and says it is rewarding to be able to help Team Members of all abilities “to see and reach their potential. We are all human and we are all different in some way and that is beautiful.”
When Chelsea is not working, she is writing fiction, hanging out with friends, or attending school through her day program at Outside The Box. Recently, Chelsea started an awards program for her peers at Outside The Box, for those going above and beyond in categories like Acceptance, Collaboration, and Integrity. We are certainly thankful to have Chelsea and her spirit of community on the Giant Eagle team!
