A Month to Commemorate the History and Contributions of our Asian & Asian American Neighbors
In the fall of 2020, Giant Eagle launched one of our newest business resource groups with the Asian American Business Resource Group (AABRG)! The AABRG was formed to create a community for Team Members identifying as Asian, and provide resources to promote positive engagement, personal development, and professional advancement.
We're thrilled to put the spotlight on our Asian American Business Resource Group as we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month throughout the month of May. This month commemorates the history and contributions of Asians & Asian Americans in the United States.
The History of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
The origin of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month dates back to the 1970s when five joint resolutions were introduced proposing that a week in May be designated to commemorate the accomplishments of Asian/Pacific Americans. It wasn’t until 1979 that Congress passed the resolution designating the week of May 4 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, Congress passed an amendment issuing a proclamation that expanded the observance from a week to the entire month of May.
Did you know?
The month of May was initially chosen to highlight two major events in history:
- The arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the U.S. on May 7th, 1843
- The completion of the transcontinental railroad (with significant contribution from the Asian immigrant community) on May 10th, 1869
Chicken Adobo Meal Kit
During the month of May, we're excited to introduce a NEW Meal Kit in our Giant Eagle and Market District supermarkets. The meal kit was inspired by a family recipe shared by Cat, Marketing Operations Specialist at Giant Eagle!
We'll also be hosting a virtual Chicken Adobo Meal Kit Cooking Happy Hour hosted by Giant Eagle Executive Chefs, exclusively for Giant Eagle and GetGo Team Members. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn, not only a new recipe, but also to enhance our knowledge of Asian culture and cuisine.
Movie Club Discussion: MINARI
The AABRG will be hosting a Movie Club Discussion, exclusively for Giant Eagle and GetGo Team Members on the six-time Oscar nominated film, Minari.
A tender and sweeping story about what roots us, Minari follows a Korean-American family that moves to an Arkansas farm in search of their own American Dream. The family home changes completely with the arrival of their sly, foul-mouthed, but incredibly loving grandmother. Amidst the instability and challenges of this new life in the rugged Ozarks, Minari shows the undeniable resilience of family and what really makes a home.
Giant Eagle's Asian American Business Resource Group will be hosting a virtual Poetry Night, exclusively for Giant Eagle & GetGo Team Members. This event will be a wonderful evening of reading and discussion on the works of notable Asian & Asian American poets:
- Bao Phi
- Julayne Lee
- Kirun Kapur
- Vivek Shraya
In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, our Asian American Business Resource Group is excited to highlight the many unique career paths and talents that make up our Giant Eagle & GetGo family. Check back each week, as we'll be getting to know several members of our Asian American Business Resource Group!
