Travis Coon

Travis, Front End Team Leader & United States Army Veteran

How did you come to work for Giant Eagle?

I had just gotten out of the service and was working at Kaufman’s (Macy’s), when I got laid off. A friend told me Giant Eagle was hiring, so I applied. Giant Eagle has been good to me. I eventually moved into leadership roles, and the Company helped me move to supermarket locations that were closer to my home. I’ve been able to raise two kids while working here.

What do you love most about your current role?

I love meeting new people and working with the new Team Members. I like being able to help them when they need it and watching them develop into responsible young men and women.

Can you describe your military career?

I served in the Army for 10 years from 1981-1991. I did three years active service and seven in the reserves. I spent time in a variety of places from Ft. Benning, GA to Kitzigen, Germany. I was in Technology Support and ran my own supply room. I was responsible for all the equipment. I was only 17 years old when I enlisted and essentially grew up in the military. I learned so much, and I still have friendships with people from that time in my life.

What three words would you use to describe Giant Eagle?

Caring. Bold. Resourceful.

A "fun fact" about Travis:

Most people who know me know that I have a song for every occasion!

Tammara Sweeney

Tammara, Facilities Manager & United States Army Veteran

How did you come to work for Giant Eagle?

I started out dispatching for the internal maintenance group and then became the supervisor for the maintenance group. I learned and proved my worth regarding my knowledge of maintenance.  When there was an opening for a Facility Manager, I spoke to the manager and they agreed to promote me.

Can you describe your military career?

I served for three years in the Army as a 92B (Lab Technician). I worked in a urinalysis lab in Wiesbaden, Germany and a blood bank at FT Meade MD.

What has been your experience with Giant Eagle's Business Resource Groups?

I'm a member of the Women’s Business Resource Group (WBRG) and the Veterans Business Resource Group (VBRG). The WBRG volunteered at Habitat for Humanity for Women’s Day. The VBRG volunteered at the Solon Market District for the Voter Registration Drive. These groups provide an inclusive forum with Team Members that have common interests and can help foster relationships with Team Members you might not have ever had the opportunity to meet outside of these groups.

What do you enjoy most about the Giant Eagle company culture?

I love the flexibility I have to balance my work and home life, as well as the ability to try new ideas. Giant Eagle is always trying to be innovative.

How did you come to work for GetGo?

I retired from the Military in 2012 and after seven years in manufacturing, I wanted to go a different direction with my career that left me time to volunteer with my Veterans Groups (Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion) and help my local community.

What do you love most about your current role?

Working in my community is by far one of the best things about being with GetGo.  I get to speak to and hear suggestions from the local community, many of whom already know me from outside GetGo, on improvements or products we can sell.

Can you describe your military career?

I served in the United States Navy for 16 years before retiring in 2012.  My primary occupation was as an Aviation Electronics Technician where I worked on the Communications, Navigation, and Weapons systems of various Military and Civilian aircraft.  My roles near the end of my Naval career had me overseeing the overall maintenance and flight schedules for up to 25 aircraft in which I led a department of 110 sailors.

Out of the newly refreshed Core Values (Respect All, Think Team, See It Own It, Work Smart, Live Well and Do Right), which Core Value resonates with you the most? Why?

Do Right. I feel Do Right resonates with me the most not only as a Core Value but a mantra everyone should live by.  To ‘Do Right’ does not just apply to work like all the Core Values but it is also doing right by your community, veterans, neighbors, and family.  Doing what is right can be as small as returning a $5 bill that was dropped by someone, voting for a local or federal election, or volunteering your time to help youth sports. To  ‘Do Right’ is the best way to live in my opinion.
