It's #TechThursday! Meet Josh, eCommerce & Payments Product Manager on our eCommerce Technology Team!
This week's #TechThursday is featuring Josh, eCommerce & Payments Product Manager on our eCommerce Technology Team! Josh joined the team in 2015 as an Intern and quickly became a valued member of our eCommerce department. He has played an instrumental role in the implementation of numerous projects (and some have even earned awards!)
Can you describe some current (or recent) projects you’ve worked on?
We recently implemented gift cards as a form of tender online. Working with our site providers and the POS team, we were able to configure the online payment system to enable users to add multiple gift cards to an order along with an alternate payment method. We have gift card as tender tied to our mobile gift card wallet, as well.
Adding a card to the wallet or conversely, to the app, allows the user to view it on the other platform, making it easier for our guests to access their details and cutting down on repetitive actions. This effort helps bring our eCommerce group more in line with our competitors and allows us to grow our own brand gift card business as we continue to see growth in online channels.
What led you to an IT career?
I had spent a few years in the engineering program at PITT and it didn’t seem to be what I wanted. I took a year off to participate in the Disney College Program and while living in Florida, I spent time talking to the people working in various roles at Disney. The IT groups were always working on some new project or technology and seemed to have a hand in everything that was going on. I transferred to Duquesne when I got back and really dove into their Information Systems program.
What has been your career path within Giant Eagle?
I started as a Business Analyst Intern in the summer of 2015 on our retail systems team. We implemented 13 new handheld apps for the new MC40 handheld devices replacing the old scanners used by store Team Members, and I got to see how the autonomous replenishment system worked.
I moved over to the eCommerce department in the fall of 2015 and started working on our four mobile applications. I moved up through the Business Analyst role tree for a few years working on our marketing and commerce sites implementing a gift card ordering site, GetGo made-to-order food app and site, a data migration effort from two old servers to a new one, and a new consolidated mobile application blending the features of the original three into one. This year I have been given the opportunity to move into a Product Management role and continue to work with our team on our commerce sites and applications, and the payments platform.
What is your favorite thing about working in IT/eCommerce?
Every day is different. There are new ideas or projects coming in every day. I see each one as a puzzle we get to solve using the existing pieces we have in our tech stack coupled with new ideas and programming.
Have you or your team won any recent industry awards?
Our team recently won an award for our gift card platform after implementing a gift card wallet within our app that allows users to store Giant Eagle and other retailer gift cards in one system. Cards are automatically added to the wallet for users when the buy them online, making it easier to find and user them when you need them. The award for "Best Omnichannel Experience" was given out at the Blackhawk conference and is voted on by other retailers.
Our team also received the "2018 Think Team" award at Giant Eagle's Annual Awards Program for the implementation of a GetGo online ordering system allowing app and web orders for made-to-order foods and some in-store items through the app and website.
A "fun fact" about Josh...
I’m a huge tabletop and board game enthusiast. I’ve got an ever-growing collection of games that take from 20 minutes to 12 hours to play through and I love bringing new people into the hobby.
