Autonomy as a Refrigeration Technician at Giant Eagle
At Giant Eagle, our Refrigeration Technicians are at the heart of keeping every supermarket, GetGo and warehouse running smoothly and coolly by ensuring the HVAC, food and beverage equipment, soda machines, and so many other pieces of equipment are running efficiently. Not only do our Technicians enjoy a safe work environment where their work keeps our operations running smoothly, they also experience the autonomy many Techs desire because they get to handle their work schedule to meet the demands of the businesses they are responsible for. To help better understand a “Day in the Life” of our Refrigeration Technicians, we’d like to introduce you to Michael and Chris.

What is your job title? And what do you love most about your job?
Michael: I’m a Refrigeration Technician. The thing I love most about my job is that my leader trusts me, and I can handle my set stores without someone always calling to check in every call.
Chris: I’m also a Refrigeration Technician at Giant Eagle, and the thing I love the most is the satisfaction of solving problems and learning new things. I also really like having autonomy and being able to set my own schedule.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Michael: A typical day for me starts around 8:00 AM. I’m responsible for the store locations on the west side of Cleveland (roughly around 25-27 stores). I go to approximately 3-7 stores a day depending on the type of service needed at each one. We work on pop machines, ice machines, hot food equipment, refrigeration equipment, and HVAC.
Chris: First, I look for any new work orders that may have come in since the end of the previous day. I then prioritize all my work orders and go to the first store. I will work on HVAC, refrigeration, food and beverage equipment, and any general maintenance. Typically, I visit 2-4 stores per day.
What made you think of Giant Eagle as a possible place of employment?
Michael: My dad was employed by Giant Eagle/GetGo and he highly recommended it once he heard they were hiring for in-house technicians.
Chris: Giant Eagle was recruiting at a Technical School. I liked the idea of working for a large, stable employer with good benefits
What do you enjoy most about the Company culture, and the specific culture within the maintenance department?
Michael: The Company is always there to help when asking for it. Within my department, there are three of us currently in the Cleveland area and each of us have different skill sets. We can call each other any time of any day and bounce ideas off each other or come help, if needed.
Chris: I like the team-oriented attitude amongst all the Team Members at the stores. I also like that both my peers and leaders are more than willing to offer help.
What traits make a successful Refrigeration Technician?
Michael: Successful Technicians should know how the refrigeration cycle works, how to read a wiring diagram, how to use your meter up and down and how to check circuits. You will also need basic soft skills especially when talking with Store Leaders about repairs needed to be made when on site.
Chris: Mechanical and electrical proficiency, as well as reliability, a good work ethic, and curiosity to continue to learn.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Michael: I’m most proud of being able to buy my house at age 22.
Chris: For me, I’m most proud of the work we did during the pandemic.
Is there anything else you would like people to know about Giant Eagle?
Michael: The Giant Eagle Maintenance department is a great department to work in. You will be doing more than just refrigeration. We do a lot refrigeration and HVAC, but we also do a lot of hot side work and minor plumbing, as well. Overall, it’s been a very stress-free environment for me.
