This week's #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Tierra, Human Resources Specialist at GetGo! Tierra has been in recruiting for over twenty years, but just recently joined the GetGo team as a Human Resources Specialist. Her new role encompasses many areas of the GetGo business, but has a strong focus on recruiting new Team Members for our GetGo locations.
How did you come to work for GetGo?
I started my career in HR/Recruiting almost twenty years ago. I’ve worked in various sectors including Education, Publishing, Healthcare, and the US Department of Labor. My husband’s enthusiasm for his position at Giant Eagle piqued my interest. I started researching opportunities, networking, and I was offered a position with the Talent Acquisition Team.
Why have you chosen to stay with Giant Eagle/GetGo?
Stability. Grocery/Fuel and Convenience is an essential business that everyone utilizes. I’ve always been impressed by the years of seniority many of our Team Members possess – they are loyal. It speaks to the success of an organization. It’s comforting to not worry about where you will be year after year with an employer. Especially during these trying times. Stability can help you cope with any stressors or challenges happening in the rest of our lives.
What do you love most about your current role?
I am now a Human Resources Specialist with GetGo. I love the interaction with people that comes along with this role, which includes working with our community partners, meeting candidates, onboarding, and partnering with our District Leaders and Store Leadership on various projects.
What do you enjoy most about the Giant Eagle company culture, and the specific culture within your department?
I enjoy going into a store and seeing Leaders working right along with their teams. This creates a sense of respect and teamwork. Our leaders are often out in front, leading by example. The collaboration and support that we receive within my department is amazing, we have a fun positive group!
Do you actively participate in any Business Resource Groups? If yes, can you speak to your experiences and how the BRG improve the workplace?
Yes, I am a member of the BLACC (Black Leaders and Collaborators Collective) business resource group. With Giant Eagle’s support, I have participated in many activities including assisting an elementary classroom with setting up an ice cream shop, attending professional networking events, collaborating with our local Urban League Chapter, volunteering at food shelters, and participating in professional development opportunities, to name just a few activities. This BRG has improved the workplace by serving as a resource for all Giant Eagle Team Members who are interested in fostering success with our African American/Black Team Members, as well as improving our relationships within the community.

What advice would you give to a job seeker who is filling out an application for a position with the GetGo team?
Fill out all the fields within the application process, such as your employment history. Thoroughly read the position description before submitting the application, and be flexible about which positions and locations you apply for, which will increase your employment opportunities.
What advice would you give to a job seeker who is preparing for a phone interview for a position with the GetGo team?
Remember telephone etiquette: Let your family members, friends or roommates know that you have applied and are expecting an important interview or employer phone screening call.
Smile. Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change your tone of voice.
Also, be sure to focus and listen to the questions being asked. It is okay to take a few seconds to answer the question.
What advice would you give to a job seeker who is preparing for an in person or virtual Hiring Manager interview?
If the interview is virtual – prior to the meeting, test your technology. Use a neutral background and minimize distractions. Ensure that you are set up for success. Also, dress in a manner that is tasteful and presentable for the role in which you have applied.
Familiarize yourself with the company by conducting research so that you are ready to answer common questions and ask some questions of your own.
What advice would you give to a current Team Member who aspires to get promoted?
If your future aspirations include a promotion, be sure to set and communicate your goals and ambitions with your leadership team. Document your success. If you take initiative and continue to learn by improving and developing your skills, new opportunities will be presented to you. Join a BRG. Attend networking events and information sessions. Be flexible and show leadership potential by displaying passion, confidence, and trustworthiness.
