Giant Eagle Celebrates NDEAM! Meet Stephen, Team Member and Andy, Prepared Foods Team Leader at our Kingsdale Market District
October is National Differently Abled Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and at Giant Eagle, we are so proud to call our Team Members who are differently abled a part of our family. The primary message of NDEAM is “Inclusion Drives Innovation” and we truly value the perspectives of our differently abled Team Members and their champions within the workplace.
This week, we share the story of Team Member, Stephen and his supervisor, Andy.
When Stephen is not busy training for and playing nearly 10(!) Special Olympics sports, he brings that on-the-go energy to his work in the Prepared Foods Department. From swimming and soccer to basketball and bowling, Stephen is a master at playing hard and working hard. His typical tasks at the store involve keeping the dining room and eat-in tables clean, keeping condiments stocked, and tidying the soup bar. Though as we all know, the past few months have been anything from typical for anyone. That is where - says supervisor, Andy - Stephen’s versatility has been an asset.
Since the dining room has not been open, Stephen has been focusing more on making guests feel welcome and safe and sanitizing shopping carts – tasks that are more important that ever these days. Andy says that Stephen’s willingness and ability to quickly shift gears in his role has been refreshing and truly helpful, and his positivity is infectious. Stephen’s favorite part of the job is the people he sees each day, and Andy knows the feeling is mutual: “…Stephen has a great attitude and is always fun to work with. He is happy to see everyone and they are always happy to see him. Seeing that friendly face makes their day.”
Andy says that hiring and working with differently abled Team Members has a positive impact team-wide and Company-wide because “…it speaks to our commitment to being inclusive and bringing out the best in everyone. It makes [me and] our team proud to be a part of the Giant Eagle family.”
Stephen is grateful that since starting at Giant Eagle, he’s been able to learn more about the types of jobs that are available, and when asked what he would tell a friend looking for work, he proudly stated “ I would tell them Giant Eagle is the best company to work for!” That pride from Team Members of all abilities is something that Andy says has benefitted him both personally and professionally: “It has helped me to appreciate everyone's ability and taught me never to take any task for granted, large or small. I have received some of the most honest and insightful feedback from some of my differently abled peers.
