Giant Eagle Celebrates NDEAM! Meet Ryan, Team Member and Tom, Distribution Supervisor at our HBC Service Co. Warehouse
October is National Differently Abled Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) and at Giant Eagle, we are so proud to call our Team Members who are differently abled a part of our family. The primary message of NDEAM is “Inclusion Drives Innovation” and we truly value the perspectives of our differently abled Team Members and their champions within the workplace.
This week, we share the story of Team Member, Ryan and his supervisor, Tom.
After five years on the job, Ryan knows a lot about keeping our warehouse spotless. When asked about his daily tasks, he listed without hesitation: “…sanitation, cleaning up spills - clearing the warehouse of debris, wiping down railings…” And although he’s often the only Team Member on the second shift, Ryan says he’s definitely a social person. He loves interacting with his team and enjoys the occasional overlap with someone starting their shift to complete a two-person task.
Supervisor Tom agrees that Ryan’s dedication to his team is apparent in his work, saying that Ryan has been “…a perfect fit to the Sanitation team and is always worried about his fellow Team Members…I would like to have more Team Members like Ryan with his will and determination.” Ryan appreciates that his team is looking out for him, too. He is grateful to be able to share concerns with Cheri in HR, and even though his ability to be as social as he’d like has been curtailed a bit by the pandemic, he still enjoys chatting with his teammates when he can and says it’s great that everyone is so easy to get along with.
Tom recognizes that what Ryan brings to the team is not only what he completes in a day – his impact is far-reaching. Tom says that having Ryan on the team has helped him to share and explain to other businesses the value of employing differently abled Team Members. Tom says businesses “would benefit from having differently abled Team Members and would have a dedicated and loyal team member for life.”
When he’s not at HBC, Ryan is passionate about his fiction writing and he loves music and singing. He is a movie buff. as well; his favorite movie is “Taken” with Liam Neeson. He says that “Giant Eagle is a good company to work for, and good for people with special needs.”
