IT'S #TECHTHURSDAY! MEET PHILIP, IT BUSINESS ANALYST ON OUR MERCHANDISING & MARKETING TECHNOLOGY TEAM!
This week's #TechThursday is featuring Philip, IT Business Analyst on Giant Eagle's Merchandising and Marketing Technology team! Philip started his career at Giant Eagle on a Merchandising category team and quickly realized his interest in the technology side of the business. He's been an instrumental member of the team from day one.
What has been your career path within Giant Eagle?
I started working for Giant Eagle soon after I graduated from college. I was in Dairy and Frozen Food Merchandising and learned our business from those roles. I also had exposure to Merchandising technology projects as a system user and proved myself as a subject matter expert. I can relate very well to my current stakeholders because I’ve done their jobs in the past.
I’ve had the opportunity to move up within the organization, transitioning from Merchandising to Strategic Pricing and eventually Project Management concentrated in those areas. Leadership recognized my business knowledge and analytical skills and offered me a role on our IT business analysis team. I’ve had supportive peers and managers at Giant Eagle who mentored me into a career path that makes the most of my industry knowledge and technical understanding.
I left Giant Eagle for several years to support a major CRM implementation at another Pittsburgh-based company. While I gained valuable new experience, I missed the unique challenges and benefits of working for a dynamic retail organization. I am thrilled to be back and grateful for the warm welcome I’ve received.
Can you describe some current or recent projects you’ve worked on? How have they impacted the business?
I’m working on replacing an outdated piece of technology that plays a critical role in communicating Giant Eagle’s weekly print and digital promotions to our customers. Our new tool will offer improved performance and allow us to upgrade other software that is integral to promotional advertising. We’ll also create efficiencies for many cross-functional team members who collaborate daily on our promotions process.
I am also working on several initiatives to improve data quality so that our merchandisers can reduce time spent chasing accurate information and our analytics teams can maximize their reporting output.
Are there any skills, activities or experiences that you are able to use in your current role that your counterparts in other companies do not get to use/experience?
My responsibilities are not limited to my job description. Giant Eagle empowers me to strategize and lead as well as execute. In addition to working on long-term projects and helping with support, I am included in developing our IT road map. I have the opportunity to evaluate software vendors to ensure they meet our needs. I also advise on project priorities, system architecture, design and user experience.
What is your favorite thing about working in IT?
My favorite thing about working in IT is that I’m continuously learning new technologies by supporting multiple projects at once. Our business is rapidly evolving so my team is focused on enhancing our current systems while implementing new technology at the same time. It is challenging and never boring!
What is your favorite thing about working for Giant Eagle?
Giant Eagle is committed to supporting a work/life balance. I had a family member with severe health challenges that often required my attention, sometimes at short notice. My peers and leaders are empathetic and understood my need to care for my family while continuing to meet my goals at work. Giant Eagle also recognizes high-performing team members and partners with them on career development.
A “Fun Fact” about Philip:
My husband and I have a 15-yeard old Bichon-Maltese mix named Chloe. She’s my number one stakeholder at home and drives all the requirements for our house projects. We had an ugly chair for years that we couldn’t move because Chloe loves her window view. She now has a whole sofa to herself… in the same space.
