Meet Patrick, Procurement Assistant At Giant Eagle
How did you come to work for Giant Eagle?
I just hit seven years with Giant Eagle in March. I started out at the Bethel Park Giant Eagle in the Cheese Department as a Clerk. I did that for about two years and then I began the Retail Operations Intern Development Program. After that, I finished going to school and came back and went into the Store Leader Development Program for about three years. This past Thanksgiving, I transitioned to the Procurement team in the corporate office.
What made you decide to make that transition from Retail to corporate?
A lot of it was just wanting to change up my work environment. I had been in Retail for a long time and the scheduling was demanding. I had always wanted to be more in an office type of environment, so when I saw the Procurement Assistant position pop up, I decided to go for it.
Why have you chosen to stay with Giant Eagle?
I’d say it’s because of the people I’ve met along the way. I keep in contact with at least a dozen people that I’ve met over the years. Going from the stores to the corporate environment, I bump into people that I’ve met along the way, all the time.
What do you love most about your current role?
I like getting to see the backend of things. Right now, a lot of my responsibilities include setting up new products and vendors for the stores. It’s been nice getting to see how things happening on the backend translate to what’s going on in the stores. I’m very familiar with Store Operations and how the ordering systems works, so seeing how tags get to the shelf and how the autonomated replenishment systems works on this side, is very interesting to me. It’s nice to have worked in the stores because I can relate most of the stuff I’m learning now back to my experiences in Retail. If I hadn’t spent that time in the stores prior to joining the Procurement team, a lot of our processes wouldn’t make as much sense, and I wouldn’t have been able to catch on as quickly.
What do you love about Giant Eagle?
Work/life balance is really important for me. Working at Giant Eagle has allowed me to have a social life in addition to building my professional career.
Also, I know it’s a common response but working at Giant Eagle truly is like working with one big family. I never would have thought I would have made some really great friends working at a job. Some people just come to work and don’t care to make new friends, but at Giant Eagle, I’ve built some great relationships and connections along the way.
