Meet Cory, Guest Service & Communication Specialist at GetGo Cafe + Market
This week's #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Cory, Guest Service & Communication Specialist at GetGo Cafe + Market! Cory's career with GetGo and Giant Eagle began as a part time Cashier with GetGo nearly 12 years ago. He has since worked his way up the retail leadership structure and moved into various corporate roles supporting both Giant Eagle and GetGo. Cory has also been an instrumental leader for GE Proud, Giant Eagle's LGBTQ+ Business Resource Group.
How did you come to work for GetGo?
I began with GetGo in 2008 as a part time Cashier while I was in college. I eventually worked my way up through the GetGo leadership structure and became a GetGo Store Leader in 2012. I’ve held many roles with Giant Eagle & GetGo since 2012, such as Field Recruiter, HR Coordinator, Talent Coach, Executive Secretary, and my current role of Guest Service & Communication Specialist. The roles I’ve held over the last 12 years have given me a strong background in retail operations, human resources, retail recruiting, project management and training and Development.
In addition to the positions that I’ve held, I am also involved with GE Proud, our LGBTQ+ Business Resource Group, and stepped into the President role in October.
Why have you chosen to stay with GetGo?
I have chosen to stay with Giant Eagle and GetGo over the last 12 years because of the endless opportunities I’ve had to expand my knowledge outside of roles that I’ve had. Giant Eagle has given me countless opportunities to branch out outside of my comfort level, which has helped me expand my knowledge and passion for the organization. The Company has truly shown me that they value their Team Members’ development by giving us the tools necessary to progress our careers.
What do you love most about your current role?
My current role gives me the unique opportunity to be constantly challenged in new ways. Although I officially oversee Guest Service & Communications, I am consistently working on additional projects that branch out into other areas of the business. Each project brings me a unique set of challenges and provides me with new opportunities to grow professionally. No two days are the same, and the constant evolution of my work keeps me excited and engaged.
What work are you most proud of?
The work I am most proud of is the work that the GE Proud team has done over the last few years. We have an incredible group of people that work very hard to make a difference in the LGBTQ+ community, and I’m most proud of the work we have done together. Over the last few years, we have taken the following initiatives as a group:
- HRC HEI as our baseline for performance (received a 90% in 2019)
- Specifying pronouns in email signature for all Team Members
- Joined LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce in Indianapolis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Columbus in order to partner with other LGBTQ+ organizations across our markets
- Advocated for and implemented domestic partnership healthcare
- Created and implemented gender transition guidelines
- Supported PA Youth Congress with their PA Values Campaign – working toward legislation to make sexual orientation and gender identity a protected class in PA
- Yearly PRIDE celebration planning – Giant Eagle participates in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, and Indianapolis Pride parades and are expanding to Erie and Youngstown in 2021
It’s amazing to be a part of a group that continues to push for change in both our communities and internal organization in support of the LGBTQ+ communities.
Out of the newly refreshed Core Values (Respect All, Think Team, See It Own It, Work Smart, Live Well and Do Right), which Core Value resonates with you the most? Why?
The Core Value that resonates with me the most is Respect All. I truly believe that we are all unique, and that we should celebrate our differences and similarities any way we can. Unique perspectives, backgrounds, and ways of communicating help us continue to grow both personally and professionally.
