Celebrating Women's History Month: Meet Our Women Leaders

March is Women’s History Month, our time to commemorate and acknowledge the vital role of women in history. In honor of Women's History Month, our Women's Business Resource Group (BRG) is excited to highlight several of our talented women leaders all month long. This week, we are putting the spotlight on women from various departments within Giant Eagle and GetGo.

Check back each week to meet more of our women leaders.

WBRG Logo

The women of Giant Eagle came together to inspire one another with the Women’s BRG, which served as our founding Business Resource Group. Together, they offered us a platform to honor the many talented women who make our Company great and inspired us to continue down the path of inclusion and equity through all our BRGs.

Our Women's BRG's mission is to advocate for the success of women at Giant Eagle providing support and opportunities to network, to lead, and to give back to the communities in which we serve.

While leading with their mission in mind, our Women's BRG works to:

  • Have a positive effect on the Giant Eagle culture. The intent is to change the way women participate in Giant Eagle’s success, and how women are seen and understood within the organization.
  • Complement, reinforce, promote, and accelerate Giant Eagle’s success and strategic goals by leveraging women’s alternative and valuable perspectives, skill sets, attributes, and traits.
  • Provide support to women as they navigate the changes that occur throughout their careers, finding the balance between winning at work and winning at home.
  • Promote Diversity such as talented women moving into positions of influence, talented women having a voice and a comfortable seat at the table, talented women driving real business results, across the enterprise, and creating a culture where women want to advance and succeed.

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

Women's History Month is a time to reflect on the past accomplishments of outstanding women. It's also a great opportunity to raise awareness and recognize women for working hard to achieve success.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

I am extremely proud of the work our team has done over the past year! Curbside has grown exponentially in such a short period of time. We were able to service our guests by opening three "dark stores" for contactless pickup and delivery and greatly expanding three additional locations. We also were able to completely transform our entire operation and implemented a new picking application with improved functionality. We accomplished all of this within just a few short months.

Who has helped you develop into who you are today?

My mother definitely has been a major influence in my life. She has always been supportive, loving, and caring and truly is the best example of what a mother should be. My father has taught me the meaning of hard work and dedication and I truly admire the lessons I've learned from him.

How do you stay passionate in your career?

I love being able to help people and I know that every day we are working to help people get their groceries in a safe and simple way.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I met my husband online! The online theme seems to work for me.

What is your favorite quote?

“Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't, and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.”

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

Women's History Month is about appreciating the hard work of women and understanding how women were able to get to where we are today.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplishment has, by far, been becoming a mother to three amazing daughters. Every day I make choices and work hard to be the best role model for them and encourage them to be whatever they want to be in life! Anything is possible with hard work.

Who has helped you develop into who you are today?

There have been many people who have helped along the way from friends, family, and colleagues. First, I would have to say my Mom. She showed me what it meant to work hard. I have also had a couple of direct supervisors within GetGo & Giant Eagle and my prior employer that have supported my growth by offering mentorship and guidance.

How do you stay passionate in your career?

I feel that being positive and engaging with my team enables me to stay passionate. I enjoy seeing others succeed and playing a role in that success and happiness.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

My original career aspirations were to become a Pastry Chef.

What is your favorite quote?

"Be Kind. Be Nice. Say Thank You."

Giant Eagle Team Member Deanna

Deanna, Store Leader

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

Women's History Month is a time to reflect on the women that have paved the way for others. It's important to recognize that women were not always treated equally (especially in the business world) and pay homage to those who took a stand. It's also a time to celebrate the wonderful women leaders in our business currently as well as in our own families.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplishment is managing to grow into the Store Leader I always wanted to become while raising a wonderful human being (my son, Justin). I have done this while maintaining the love and support of an amazing husband and family and friends.

Who has helped you develop into who you are today?

My mother and grandmother have been my constant role models. They are two strong women who have always led our family with love and determination. My mom raised four children while working around all our schedules to provide us with the best life possible. She is the best woman I know!

How do you stay passionate in your career?

I surround myself with others that are also passionate about this business. I have had the privilege of working with some amazing leaders and fellow Store Leaders. It's the ones you can call and laugh with or share in your excitement that help keep you going. It also has to be who you are. Nobody is going to tell you to be passionate each day. It's up to me to wake up each day and chose to be passionate!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I think they would be surprised to know that I am an identical twin. My brother and sister are also fraternal twins. My parents decided to stop after 2 sets of twins in a 3 year period (it's hard to blame them).

What is your favorite quote?

My favorite quote is, "The secret to having it all is knowing you already do." I love this because we all have bad days. The key is always being thankful for what you have. At the end of the day, I have a happy, healthy family and a job I love that provides for the wants of that family. Anything more than that is just a bonus. I have all I need.

Giant Eagle Team Member Patti

Patti, Retail Support Center HR Business Manager

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

It means supporting and celebrating women in our communities and workplace. I would define it as a time for us to reflect and celebrate women's achievements and struggles.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My two children. Nothing I do in life will ever be as great as being their mom.

Who has helped you develop into who you are today?

My mother. She taught us to stand up for what we believe in. She instilled in me that we each have a responsibility to make a difference in this world. I also have been fortunate to have strong women mentors throughout my career who encourage and challenge me.

How do you stay passionate in your career?

By continuing to learn. Both professional and personal development are important to me. Remembering my purpose keeps me focused and passionate.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I secretly enjoy playing Candy Crush.

What is your favorite quote?

"Bloom where you are planted."

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

It is important that we take time to recognize and learn from female leaders in (and outside of) our Company! There are so many great examples of women that have paved the way for our current and future leaders. It's also important to know that there are other women you can lean on and learn from when faced with opportunities or challenges.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Seeing our team (and Company) come together and overcome gigantic obstacles over the past year as a result of the pandemic. I never could have fathomed the challenges and transformation we experienced in the last 12 months, and I couldn't be more proud of my team for how they reacted, adapted, and delivered to our customers and communities!

Who has helped you develop into who you are today?

I have had many mentors over the years from grade school, to college, to professional life that have all helped me develop into the person I am today. I think the interesting side of mentorship is the fact that you can pick up little pieces and lessons from various people over the course of time to build a unique perspective and approach. Throughout my time at Giant Eagle, I am grateful to have had the leadership of Sue Carenbauer, Val Ciarimboli, and Graham Watkins to learn from.

How do you stay passionate in your career?

It's easy for me to stay passionate about the work that we do when I think about the customer - reading the weekly VOG comments about how important Curbside has become to people in our communities is always a great way to start the week!

What would people be surprised to know about you?

I enjoy doing the crossword puzzles in People magazine - it is a bit of a mental escape and challenge at the same time.

What is your favorite quote?

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Giant Eagle Team Member Kim

Kimberly, Sr. Specialty Recruiter

What does Women's History Month mean to you?

Personally, Women's History Month is a celebration of all women's accomplishments and contributions to society.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

One of my proudest accomplishments was completing my graduate degree with honors while I was working full-time, completing a part-time internship, and living independently for the first time. Paying off my student loan debt was another satisfying accomplishment!

Who has helped you develop into who you are today?

My Mom has been the most influential woman in my life. She is the epitome of strength, grace, and wisdom who has shown me how to practice compassion, empathy, and love toward all.

How do you stay passionate in your career?

As the daughter of a police officer, I have an inherent, innate passion for serving my community and providing a voice for those who do not have one. Impacting and making a positive difference in people's lives is my life's best work.

What would people be surprised to know about you?

People may be surprised to know that I have traveled to 5 continents - Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America. I am also a 500 hour certified yoga teacher and recently completed my level 2 Unnata Aerial yoga teacher certification.

What is your favorite quote?

"Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Continue to learn. Appreciate your *family and friends. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is." - Mary Anne Radmacher

*I added the word family into the sentence
