Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Meet Robert, Business Operations Manager
In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, our Asian American Business Resource Group (BRG) has been highlighting our Team Members throughout May. This month is a time to connect with our Asian, Asian American, and Pacific American Team Members and neighbors in celebration of the incredible diversity from South Asian and Southeast Asian to East Asian, West Asian, and Pacific Island cultures and beyond.
This week, we're thrilled to introduce Robert, Business Operations Manager at our Fresh Foods Manufacturing facility in Freedom, PA!
What is your job title? And what do you love most about your job?
My job title is Business Operations Manager.
My favorite part of my job is research and development of new products, specifically the Ready to Cook Meal Kits. Not only do I get to engage my creative side, but it requires a lot of inter-departmental coordination and logic to piece the puzzle together for a successful product. It gives me the opportunity to work with different people and products. It never feels like work!
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Ran a marathon. And I'll never do it again!
What does Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month mean to you? How has your heritage and the experience of being Asian in the U.S. shaped the person you are today?
I am a fourth generation American. My parents grew up in a time of assimilation, where it was a bad thing to embrace their Asian heritage. There was constant societal pressure for them to "be more American". For that reason, I wasn't able to grow up with many Asian influences. I felt very disconnected with my roots and didn't have a full understanding of who I was as a person. For a long time, I brushed this feeling aside and didn't worry about it, but as I got older, I developed a yearning to understand my Asian roots to better understand not only myself, but the community around me.
Now as an adult I make greater efforts to learn more about my heritage. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has become my opportunity to fully embrace and learn more about where my family and I come from. During this time, I watch more Asian led and directed films and cook Asian cuisine weekly.
Out of Giant Eagle's newly refreshed Core Values, which Core Value resonates with you the most? Why?
Think Team. I feel like work is just like a community - we're stronger when together. There's no way that I would be able to complete successful projects without the help and support of my team. It's just a bonus that they all happen to be amazing people too.
What are some interesting hobbies or talents that most people may not know about you?
I'm a big comic book fan and am always ready to talk about movies and TV. When I'm not doing that, I'm usually clung to my ping pong table!
