Brian, Merchandising Planner

This week’s #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Brian, Merchandising Planner at Giant Eagle’s Corporate campus. Brian joined the Giant Eagle family at just 17 years old pushing carts and never imagined that would be the beginning of a long, successful career at Giant Eagle. He quickly took on leadership roles and learned that there is much more to Giant Eagle than just “selling groceries”. Read more about what inspires Brian and why he has chosen to build his career here.

How did you come to work for Giant Eagle?

I started with Giant Eagle in July 2010. I was very young at the time and was still in high school. I was looking for a job to put a few extra dollars in my pocket, and my parents wanted to teach me work ethic and work life balance. At the time, I had no intentions of making a career out of it, but I started pushing shopping carts at the Canfield Giant Eagle. Fast forward throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in many different roles throughout the store. Most of my career has been spent in Retail Operations, including managing departments, customer service and the front-end. I have also worked on some new store openings, which were awesome experiences as well. I helped open the Grandview Yard Market District and the Carmel Bridges Market District.

Brian, Merchandising Planner

So, I’ve held a variety of roles throughout the store including some store leadership roles, and now I’m working in the Merchandising Department as a Merchandising Planner. I essentially manage the day-to-day in merchandising plans for the stores. My career has certainly come full circle, and there are a lot of parallels between the two.

Why have you chosen to stay with Giant Eagle for almost 10 years?

First and foremost, I think Giant Eagle does a great job of being a people-first business. In Retail, we are in the people business. I’ve watched, not only myself, but others around me be empowered to have direct control over their personal growth and their development. There are many resources that are available to us at Giant Eagle that are invaluable. I’ve really been able to own my career path and be the decision-maker for my future. I have personal and developmental goals, and I’ve been able to watch those come to fruition, which has been one of the most gratifying things about building my career at Giant Eagle. It’s a people-first Company that truly cares about the developmental piece.

What do you love most about your current role?

I love the innovation aspect of my current role as a Merchandising Planner. I work with food and I try to describe myself as someone who discovers the pleasure of food. Throughout my career in retail, all the behind-the-scenes decisions and planning had already been made as product arrived at the store.  Now, I find myself even more involved in guiding our total company’s strategic plan aimed at meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations.  It’s opportunities like this that make Giant Eagle a rewarding place to work, and for me, a very gratifying career path.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Giant Eagle?

Everyone views it as “just a grocery store” or your “just working with groceries”, but I think what people don’t understand is that it’s more than just an apple or a pear or a can of green beans. The work that we set out to do everyday is inspiring and we all have the same common goals. I think there are a lot of misperceptions around what we do and how we do it, so really reemphasizing the difference we make in people’s lives, whether it be fellow Team Members or the guests that shop our stores. There’s an overall bigger and broader mission than just “selling groceries.” At Giant Eagle, we’re selling an experience.

Alicia, Kitchen Lead at the Monroeville GetGo Cafe + Market

This week’s #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Alicia, Kitchen Lead at the Monroeville GetGo Café + Market! Alicia came to work for GetGo in 2016 at the recommendation of her friends who already worked for GetGo and she hasn’t looked back since. Get to know more about Alicia here.

How did you come to work for GetGo?

I joined the Company in 2016. Before joining the GetGo team, I had been a General Manger for a Quick Service Restaurant for about seven years, and I was only able to go so far with that company. I had basically hit a ceiling, so after doing that for so long, I felt like I was pinned in a box and wanted to go somewhere where I had growth and advancement opportunities. GetGo has provided that for me. I’ve had so many possibilities in the short time that I’ve been with GetGo, and it’s been amazing.

Alicia, Kitchen Lead at the Monroeville GetGo Cafe + Market

Alicia, Kitchen Lead at the Monroeville GetGo Cafe + Market

I was hired on as a Kitchen Lead at the new Verona GetGo location when they rebuilt that store. Then I came here to the Monroeville location with Melanie, my Store Leader, when they offered me this opportunity. Melanie is amazing and it’s great to take on new challenges. I got to start over with a new team and train them with the knowledge that I now have that I didn’t have before, when we opened Verona. It’s exciting to come at it from that different angle.

Why have you chosen to stay with GetGo?

A big reason that I’ve stayed for three years is definitely because of the people. I have never worked for a company that has such friendly and open managers and leaders that are willing to listen and offer feedback. It’s amazing to be able to interact with these people. I always feel heard. Someone is always willing to listen to me.

The Team Members are amazing! They are people that I would have never met if I had not come to work at GetGo. I’ve never had a day where I’ve woken up and didn’t want to come to work.

What do you love most about your current role?

Personally, I feel like training people isn’t my strong suit, but I really enjoy helping people learn new things. When we try new things and products, like the paninis, I like working with the team to help bring those new products to our guests. At Verona, we were a test store, so we got a lot of the new products first. I also got to train the team on the new products, as well.

What was your best day at work?

My best day at work was the grand opening day here at the Monroeville GetGo Café + Market. The excitement was awesome! We had The Boys and Girls Club here and they did the sub challenge. It was events like that, that made the grand opening such a special day. People in the community came out and welcomed us.

Have you had anyone you consider to be a mentor play a role in your career? How have they influenced you?

Melanie, my Store Leader, has had a strong influence on my career. She been a big influence on me in general. She’s helped me turn some of my weaknesses into strengths. She’s helped me to think about things in a different way for my betterment and the team’s betterment. She understands me and gets me. She’s willing to help me figure out any issues and supports me to achieve my goals.

Dean, Distribution Supervisor at Fresh Foods Manufacturing

This week’s #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Dean, Distribution Supervisor at our Fresh Foods Manufacturing facility in Freedom, PA! Dean leads the team that makes sure the shelves are stocked and full at our GetGo locations. His passion for process improvement and making sure his team is happy is unparalleled, and we’re excited for you to get to know him. Read the rest of Dean’s story here.

How did you come to work for Giant Eagle?

Dean, Distribution Supervisor at Fresh Foods Manufacturing

Dean, Distribution Supervisor at Fresh Foods Manufacturing in Freedom, PA

I’ve been with the Company twice. In 2004, I worked at OK Grocery for two years. An opportunity came up that I couldn’t pass up, so I took it, but I came back about three years later to Fresh Foods Manufacturing. I’m a Distribution Supervisor. I make sure that the flow of work goes through, that the Team Members are happy, and that we are all living our Core Values every day. I try to embody the “Step Up” Core Value. We take care of each other and I try to listen to the Team Members. We just incorporated a four, ten-hour work week recently. We were hearing that the Team Members weren’t getting a lot of home time, so we came up with a work week made up of four, ten-hour days, so that two out of the three weeks they get a long week. Everyone seems to be enjoying that right now, and we’re seeing happier Team Members, which is important. Your team can either make or break you, and if you’re team isn’t happy, you’re not going to get the work done.

Why have you chosen to stay with Giant Eagle?

The Company, and specifically my direct manager, give me the freedom to be flexible. We don’t have a rigid structure that only allows one way to do things. I have the freedom to try new things and try to improve processes. I’m big on process improvement and figuring out what we can do better tomorrow.

What do you love most about being a Distribution Supervisor?

The people. The GetGo Distribution Team is what I love most about my current role. Everyone works together, whether it’s the supervisors, leadership or the newest Team Member brought on board. Every day is a good day. I try to focus on the positives instead of the negatives.

Have you participated in any activities outside of your day-to-day work?

I volunteered for a fundraiser that benefited the United Way. We had a cookout here at Fresh Foods Manufacturing and I cooked all the hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill outside and the Team Members here were able to purchase the food and all the proceeds helped to support the United Way.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Giant Eagle?

I think sometimes people go to our stores and just expect to see the product on the shelves, but I don’t think they realize the detail that the Company puts in to make sure that good quality products get delivered to the stores. It doesn’t just happen on its own. The Company has high standards that we hold ourselves accountable to get things done.

Catherine, Crew Lead at the Lawrenceville GetGo

This week’s #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Catherine, Crew Lead at our Lawrenceville GetGo. Catherine joined the GetGo family when she was just 17 years old. She enjoys the work/life balance that her job affords her and has a passion for building relationships with her customers. Read more about Catherine’s career with GetGo.

How did you come to work for GetGo?

Catherine, GetGo Crew Lead

Catherine, GetGo Crew Lead

I started with GetGo when I was 17 years old in 2003 while I was in high school and stayed with GetGo the entire time while I went to college. I got my trade license in Cosmetology and GetGo offered me a full-time position when I was 22. The full-time position came with great health benefits and I decided to take it. I stayed here and quit doing hair on the side. I’ve been here ever since. I’ve always worked in the Lawrenceville location because it’s close to home.

What made you think of GetGo as a possible place of employment?

It was close to home and very convenient to get to. This was one of the first GetGo locations in the area. The career path has been great. I have opportunities to progress, but right now I do work another job, and GetGo is very flexible and allows me to coordinate both jobs so I can make it work. I’m comfortable in this role and I have time invested in GetGo. GetGo is willing to work with me. My boyfriend also has a four-year-old, so right now I have the work/life balance that I need. A lot of the GetGo leaders are very understanding and are flexible with our schedules.

What was the moment you knew you’d made the right decision to work here?

I have regular customers that come in and know that I’ve been here for a long time. The customers appreciate that I’m here for them. They talk to me and I’ve built some great relationships with our customers. I’ve seen kids grow up in the time that I’ve been with GetGo. I see people now that were coming in here when they were in grade school and they’re coming in now as adults. Now their kids come in and it blows my mind. It’s nice to watch it all come full circle.

What was your best day at work?

There was a day when my fellow Team Member and friend got promoted and afterwards, he told me that he credited me for his promotion, which felt good. It was great to see him succeeding, and I’m really happy for him. I think the best feeling is seeing Team Members that I’ve trained grow in their own careers with GetGo. It’s a great feeling and makes it all worth it.

Amy, Pharmacy Technician & 2018 Pharmacy Technician of the Year

This week’s #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Amy, Pharmacy Technician at our Broadview Heights Giant Eagle! Amy has been a Giant Eagle Team Member for 20 years and was just named Giant Eagle’s 2018 Pharmacy Technician of the Year! We would like to thank Amy for her commitment to our patients and for always being willing to go above and beyond. Get to know more about Amy here.

How did you come to work for Giant Eagle?

I’ve been with Giant Eagle for 20 years this April. I was a customer and I frequently got my prescriptions filled with Giant Eagle. One day I was there and saw they were hiring Pharmacy Techs. I applied to be in the pharmacy, and I’ve been here ever since.

Can you tell us about the award that was presented to you last week?

I was nominated by my Team Leader. Our pharmacy leadership team came in and presented me with the “2018 Pharmacy Technician of the Year” award and a check. They made a big deal out of it with a party and balloons. It was amazing. I wasn’t expecting it at all.

I was nominated because I’m a numbers kind of person, so when we have goals that we’re working towards like flu shots, getting patients to complete surveys, etc. I push myself, and I try to motivate the team, so we can meet those goals. I love feeling accomplished when we achieve our goals. During every patient interaction, I always try to talk about the initiatives or promotions we have running at that time. We pass out surveys to the patients. I try to inform our patients of what we offer, so our patients come to us instead of one of the local hospitals. We’re surrounded by hospitals and clinics, so we tell our patients, “Why not come to us and get the $5 for it, instead of paying at a clinic?” A lot of times our patients are here doing their grocery shopping anyway. It just makes sense.

How did it feel to be selected as the 2018 Pharmacy Technician of the Year?

It felt awesome to be recognized with this award. There are so many tasks I do every day and it’s great to know my leader sees that. To me, it just feels like it’s part of my job, but they recognized me for going above and beyond for our patients. It feels great to be appreciated.

What are you most proud of?

Just being part of this team makes me proud. It’s nice to be part of a team and be able to lean on my Team Leader when needed. Our Pharmacists are always willing to help, so we never feel like we’re on our own. We are a team where everyone enjoys their job.

What do you love most about your current role?

I’d have to say the customers are what I love most as a Pharmacy Technician. I like interacting with the customers.

Also, like I mentioned, I’m a goal girl. I have fun when we have something to work towards. It feels good to make a difference, and to know that I’m helping make sure people are getting their shots.

What makes Giant Eagle a great place to work?

The people here make Giant Eagle a great place to work. The pharmacy leadership team stops in periodically to see us, and they always make it a point to make sure we have everything we need. At Giant Eagle, Team Members are listened to. They’re always looking for feedback and new opportunities to improve our jobs. If I ever have a problem, there are open lines of communication everywhere.

Melanie, Sr. Store Leader at the Monroeville GetGo

This week’s #TeamMemberTuesday is featuring Melanie, Sr. Store Leader at the NEW GetGo Café + Market in Monroeville, PA! Melanie joined the GetGo team just 15 months ago but is already quick to put her stamp on GetGo and make a difference for her guests and team. Get to know more about Melanie here.

What are your main responsibilities at GetGo?

My responsibilities include the people first and foremost. I take care of my team, our guests and the brand. I try to ensure that people feel valued, respected and acknowledged. It’s really important to me that my team feels that way. I try to share my knowledge and I’m committed to the group. My day-to-day responsibilities are really anything and everything. I make food, I ring the register, I take the trash out, I sweep and mop, I stock coolers, and then I do all the administrative tasks, as well. But I also try to have fun while I’m doing all of it!

What do you love about GetGo?

I enjoy the family feeling that I get from GetGo. I feel supported all the way up to the top. The Core Values at Giant Eagle are something that we believe in, feel and execute. It’s not just something that we put on a piece of paper. Being kind is very important to me. Working smart is huge.

Melanie, Sr. Store Leader at the NEW Monroeville GetGo Cafe + Market

Melanie, Sr. Store Leader at the NEW Monroeville GetGo Cafe + Market

What was your best day at work?

I have many good days, but a really good day that I can recall was a day when an older gentleman came in. He had some questions and we chatted for a bit. He went on his way and when I left about an hour later, I noticed there was a car accident and I stopped and got out of the car and it was the man I had just been talking to in the store. I called the police and I held his hand until the ambulance came. His daughter works at the Verona Giant Eagle, so I called her.

A couple weeks later after he was feeling better, he came back into the store to thank me. It was a bad day regarding what happened to him, but I felt like we were meant to meet each other and have that interaction so that I could help him with that situation when he got into the accident. I was glad I could be there for him and be able to reach out to his daughter to let her know what had happened.

What makes GetGo a great place to work?

I’d have to say GetGo’s culture makes it a great place to work. We have a very positive environment. It’s encouraging, so we don’t feel afraid to make mistakes. If you do make a mistake, you get help.

What work are you most proud of?

I am most proud of opening this brand new GetGo here in Monroeville. It was very educational and challenging, and I enjoy that. I learned a lot and I made new partners within our Company. I feel like we overcame the challenges that came up, which was a great feeling. I enjoy finding the solutions and being part of the “fix it” situation, instead of complaining about it.

Trevin, Curbside Express Team Member

In recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, we are honored to featured Trevin as this week’s #TeamMemberTuesday! Trevin is a Curbside Express Team Member at our South Hills Market District. Trevin was diagnosed at 9 years old with high functioning autism, also known as Asperger’s Syndrome. Trevin is a delight to work with and his passion for providing exceptional customer service makes him a wonderful asset to our Curbside Express team. Get to know more about Trevin here.

Trevin, Curbside Express Team Member

Trevin, Curbside Express Team Member at the South Hills Market District in Bethel Park, PA!

How did you come to work for Giant Eagle? And what do you do on a day-to-day basis?

My first day on the job was February 18th. I’ve been here for a little over a month. I worked with Giant Eagle’s Inclusion Specialist during the interview process here, and then Human Resources called me to let me know they wanted to make me a job offer. I was very excited.

I’ve been working Curbside Express for the past month. It’s a very fast-paced environment. In Curbside, we listen to what the customers order online. We pick up what they want, and we bring it back on a completed trolley. We use different bins for different types of products, and then when the customers come in to pick up their order, we take the orders out to their cars.

What do you love about working at Market District?

I love the technology that we use because it almost makes my job feel like a game of sorts, but more important than that, I love giving great service to our customers. Sometimes when I’m picking an order, customers will ask me where a product is located, and I like being able to tell them exactly where they can find it. When you work in Curbside, you learn the store like the back of your hand. I tend to have an easier time with remembering things, which helps.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of having a job right now. I feel normal, and I feel like my family is very proud of me too. It’s a wonderful feeling. My mom and dad have worried about me over the years with just trying to fit in. It’s been an uphill battle most of my life. I’m very proud to have this job and I don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon.

What challenges have you faced, and how have you worked to overcome those?

I found out when I was around 9 years old that I was autistic through testing that was done at one of the local hospitals. I found out that I have high-functioning autism, also known as Asperger’s Syndrome. I was about to go into middle school, which was a very difficult time in my life. I was bullied a lot during middle school, which was very challenging. I was given some extra resources to help, for example, I was in Autistic Support Classes, which was a good resource for me.

I ended up graduating high school with a decent GPA, and when I went off to college it was very stressful at first. I started buckling down and did what I needed to do. It felt so good to prove everyone wrong. I matured a lot during college. It was the best years of my life.

What advice would you give to someone with autism that is looking to work for Giant Eagle?

For someone like me who has been diagnosed with high-functioning autism, I would recommend they look for something within Curbside Express or the Front End. Curbside is great because it’s fast-paced but it’s a great experience and your interactions with customers are brief. My days go by very fast and it’s given me something to be proud of.

Diyora, GetGo Sr. Store Leader

Name: Diyora Alimova

What is your role and how long have you worked for Giant Eagle?

I joined Giant Eagle in 2015 and will be celebrating my 4th year with the Company this June. I am now a Sr. Store Leader for Shaler GetGo #3280. I started as an Intern in the summer of 2015 in my junior year of college, while working toward my bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Economics. After the internship, I was offered an Assistant Store Leader position in 2016. I was later chosen to work on Accelerator Projects for GetGo, where I have implemented a variety of different initiatives into 30+ stores, working with 100+ Team Members and leaders to drive operational results.

What do you like most about working at Giant Eagle?

I like the involvement of the entire Company, diligently working on achieving the same goal, and supporting each other through the process. I like feeling that I am an integral part of the Company. GetGo is a company that appreciates my input and results. I also like that Giant Eagle promotes growth and motivates Team Members, who in return motivate their teams.

Who has helped you develop personally and in your career as a mentor or adviser?

Diyora, GetGo Sr. Store Leader

Diyora, GetGo Sr. Store Leader

The person who has helped me develop both personally and professionally in my career is Mary Kelly, the District Leader of GetGo, Region 304. She is an exemplary leader, from whom I have learned a lot. Her insightful advice, ideas and approach to work and life have helped me grow within Giant Eagle and achieve greater results. She and my former Store Leader trained me and motivated me to become a Store Leader. As a District Leader now, she continues to help me grow and is always there to support her team.

Is there an accomplishment you are most proud of?

I was originally born and raised in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and moved to the United States in 2009, without being able to speak much English or knowing much about the American culture. My biggest accomplishment is growing personally within the 10 years I have been living in the United States, learning the language, meeting new friends and becoming one of the youngest Store Leaders in the Company.

What is your favorite business or leadership book?

My favorite leadership book is “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek.

In one word how would you describe your leadership style?

Team.

What advice would you give your younger self?

To keep my eyes not only on the end result of the goal, but also the journey that leads to it, enjoying small accomplishments and learning from mistakes.

How do you manage your work-life balance?

I am fortunate to have a great team, who make work feel like home. I have great friends and family who are very understanding of times when I have to stay longer to finish work, or when I have to prioritize work over some other things in life. Having a hobby, however, or something that interests you outside of work – always makes your work-life balance so much better. I enjoy yoga and boxing outside of work, spending time with friends and family is also very important to me.

People would be surprised to know …

I speak three languages and am learning my fourth. My native and first language is Russian. I am also fluent in Uzbek and English, and am in the process of learning French.
