Giant Eagle is honored to receive the “2018 Employer of the Year” award from Vocational Guidance Services (VGS) of Cleveland, OH for creating employment opportunities for individuals who are differently-abled.
In a statement from Vocational Guidance Services:
David is a Team Member at the Bedford, OH Giant Eagle as a result of our partnership with VGS.
Each year VGS recognizes our highly valued community and employer partnerships that assist us in getting individuals with disabilities off the employment sidelines and into good jobs. VGS’ efforts to fulfill its mission of Preparing People with Barriers to Employment for a Brighter Future are supported by well over 100 government, community, and corporate partners. Each is a valued and vital member of the extended VGS family.
Giant Eagle was nominated for the Vocational Guidance Services 2018 Employer of the Year by two VGS staff members who could not say enough about their commitment to our mission and their enthusiasm about providing work experience and job opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Giant Eagle has collaborated with VGS staff to provide job opportunities and community based assessments for individuals for many years, but the last year has seen even more growth, additional training programs put in place, and many more individuals served. Giant Eagle has a willingness to accommodate the needs of VGS’ program participants through job coaching and setting work schedules that accommodate non-medical transportation schedules. They have hired individuals to work as lot attendants, stockers, baggers, and in the bakery in multiple store locations in Ohio including Maple Heights, South Euclid, Strongsville, Legacy Village, and Bedford. Over 12 individuals who otherwise might not have been able to find employment have been hired by Giant Eagle in the last year alone through their partnership with VGS. John Germaine has been instrumental in the growth of this relationship and has encouraged us to work even closer together to further facilitate job placements for VGS program participants at Giant Eagle. We are incredibly grateful for this truly wonderful partnership and for Giant Eagle leading by example that inclusion in the workplace for individuals with disabilities is a win-win!
John Germaine, Inclusion Specialist at Giant Eagle, Joe Kolacsky, Store Leader of Green Market District and Hartville Giant Eagle, and Jeff Kapp, Vocational Guidance Services Board Member at the VGS Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon.
